Things To Do In Yorkville DECEMBER 19, 2018 | Yorkville has a colourful history and glamorous identity. Originally developed by Joseph Bloor (after whom Bloor Street is named) and William Botsford Jarvis (after whom Jarvis Street is named), the area was built to be a residential respite from the dirty air in York. Over time, the population grew, and the name of the area was changed to the Village of Yorkville . The village became known for its Victorian styled homes, quiet residential streets and picturesque gardens until the 1960s. During the 1960s, Yorkville became known as the hippie capital of Canada. Many great Canadians such as Margaret Atwood, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young spent time here developing their talent. Over time, the city of Toronto began construction of the Bloor-Danforth subway and the value of land in the neighbourhood increased substantially. Office towers and department stores constructed in the area in the 1970s and o...

When Alexa appeared at Christmas-time two years ago, most people thought it was a novelty to ask what the weather will be or to play a song. Few people understood the vision of Amazon would be verbally purchasing everything imaginable and that your calendar, contacts, lights, and appliances would all be connected. There are plenty of players in the market including Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung Smart Things, Apple and others. It starts with a hub that acts like a brain for your system to connect the different home automation devices. You'll establish an online account with the hub manufacturer so that you can adjust settings and controls. You could star...

IS YOUR ENTRYWAY WINTER-READY? Winter boots, coats, hats and mittens can create chaos when you first walk through the door, but with the right design plan, this area can be clutter-free. Not only will the space look tidy, you will save time and reduce stress when everything is dry and at your fingertips. Less water inside starts outside: Leave a rough mat outside to brush off snow and another mat inside where boots can dry. Air circulation: While it's tempting to create storage with doors to hide bulky coats, you need air flow to dry garments and boots. Hooks are much more effective than cramming coats into a closet. Well-designed and sturdy hardware: Heavy coats that stay up the first time require a good hook. Since hooks are relatively inexpensive, don't worry about saving a few dollars. A place for everything: No matter the size of your space, everything should fit neatly. If you have children in your family, assign each person...
